How Much Does a Shop Sign Cost in the UK? 2026 Pricing Guide
A typical shop sign can cost anywhere from around £400 + VAT for a simple non-illuminated fascia panel to £3,000 + VAT or more for a complete shopfront signage package.
The final price depends on the size of the sign, materials, construction, whether it is illuminated, the complexity of the design and how straightforward it is to install.
At The Sussex Sign Company, we have been designing, manufacturing and installing shop signs and retail signage since 1995.
In this guide, we’ll explain what different types of shop signage typically cost, what affects the final price and how to get the best signage for your budget.
All prices in this guide are indicative 2026 starting prices and exclude VAT. Every project is different, so an accurate quotation will depend on your individual requirements.
How Much Should I Budget for a Shop Sign?
Here is a useful starting point based on the types of shop signage we regularly manufacture:
These figures are intended as a useful guide rather than a quotation.
A straightforward fascia panel with applied graphics might start from around £400 + VAT, while an aluminium tray, individual lettering, illumination or a more complex installation will increase the cost.
A complete shopfront combining a fascia, dimensional lettering, window graphics, projecting signage or illumination will commonly fall somewhere between £750 and £3,000 + VAT, although particularly large or complex projects can cost more.
The important point is that you do not necessarily need the most expensive sign to create the greatest impact. Good design, appropriate materials and making the best use of the available space can often achieve far more than simply spending more money.
What Affects the Price of a Shop Sign?
There are several reasons why two signs that appear to be roughly the same size can have very different prices.
Size
The larger the sign, the more material is generally required, but size is only part of the equation.
A large but relatively straightforward aluminium composite fascia can sometimes cost less than a much smaller sign containing individually manufactured and illuminated letters.
The dimensions can also influence how the sign is transported and installed.
Materials
There is no single material that is right for every shop sign.
An aluminium composite panel can produce an attractive and cost-effective fascia. An aluminium tray sign provides additional depth and a more substantial appearance.
Acrylic, aluminium and other materials can then be used to create flat-cut or three-dimensional lettering.
We use a wide variety of materials across our shop signage range because the correct choice depends on the appearance required, location, expected lifespan and available budget.
Design and Construction
A rectangular fascia with printed or cut vinyl graphics is relatively straightforward to manufacture.
Individual logos, dimensional lettering, specialist finishes and bespoke shapes require additional design and manufacturing time.
That does not mean complicated is always better. Some of the most effective shopfronts are visually very simple.
Our Knowledge Centre guide on what you should put on a sign explains why clear, uncluttered signage can often work harder than trying to include too much information.
How Much Does an Illuminated Shop Sign Cost?
Our illuminated shop signage typically starts from around £850 + VAT, but the final figure depends heavily on the type and size of illumination.
Options can include illuminated letters, halo-lit lettering, lightboxes, LED trough lighting and other systems.
Illuminated signs usually cost more because they require additional components such as LEDs, power supplies, wiring and more involved fabrication.
Whether that extra investment makes commercial sense depends on the business.
Restaurants, bars, gyms, convenience stores and businesses trading into the evening may benefit considerably from being visible after dark. A daytime-only business on a well-lit street may decide that a professionally designed non-illuminated sign represents better value.
We look at this in more detail in our guide: Is Illuminated Signage Worth the Investment for Retail Businesses?
You can also read our guide explaining when illuminated shopfront signage is worth considering.
How Much Do 3D Letters Cost?
Flat-cut or three-dimensional shop lettering typically starts from around £750 + VAT.
Individual lettering can give a shopfront a much more substantial appearance than simply printing a logo onto a flat fascia.
Letters and logo elements can be manufactured from materials such as acrylic and aluminium and can be mounted directly to a building or onto a fascia or sign tray.
The price depends on the number of letters, their size, material, thickness, complexity and whether illumination is incorporated.
A six-letter company name made from relatively simple flat-cut acrylic will therefore be a very different manufacturing job from a long business name using large individually illuminated built-up letters.
How Much Does a Projecting or Hanging Sign Cost?
Our projecting and hanging signs typically start from around £750 + VAT.
A projecting sign sits at approximately 90 degrees to the building, making it visible to people approaching along the pavement rather than only those directly opposite the premises.
They can therefore be particularly effective on high streets and shopping parades.
The final price depends on the size, construction, bracket design, whether the sign is single or double-sided and whether it is illuminated.
A projecting sign can sometimes be a very cost-effective way of improving visibility without increasing the size or complexity of the main fascia.
What About Shop Window Graphics?
Window graphics can be one of the most cost-effective ways of improving a shopfront.
Depending on the requirement, they can be used for branding, opening hours, services, promotions, privacy or full-colour imagery.
Options range from simple cut-vinyl lettering through to printed graphics, frosted films and large-format window displays.
They can be especially useful where the existing fascia is still perfectly serviceable and you want to increase the visual impact of the premises without replacing all the signage.
How Much Does Shop-Sign Installation Cost?
Installation can have a significant effect on the final price of a signage project.
A relatively small sign that can be safely and easily installed at low level is very different from signage several metres above the pavement requiring powered access equipment, scaffolding or specialist traffic and pedestrian management.
Access can be particularly important in busy town-centre locations such as Brighton & Hove, Worthing, Crawley or Eastbourne, where parking, pedestrians and restricted working areas may have to be considered.
When comparing quotations from different sign companies, check exactly what has been included.
A manufacturing-only price may appear cheaper than a quotation that includes the survey, design, manufacture, access equipment and professional installation.

Do I Need Planning Permission for a Shop Sign?
Not every shop sign requires a separate planning application, but advertisement consent or other permissions may be required depending on the type of sign, size, illumination, location and building.
Extra considerations can apply to listed buildings and premises within conservation areas.
Illuminated signage in particular is worth checking before manufacture begins.
We have a separate guide on planning permission and advertisement consent for illuminated signs.
If you are unsure, speak to us before committing to a particular specification. It is much easier to consider planning requirements at the design stage than after a sign has already been manufactured.
Is the Cheapest Shop Sign Really the Cheapest Option?
Not necessarily.
Imagine one fascia costs £800 and provides many years of service, while a cheaper alternative requires substantially earlier replacement.
The lower initial price may not represent better value over the life of the sign.
Outdoor signage has to cope with rain, wind, UV exposure and changing temperatures year after year. Materials, vinyl, fixings and manufacturing methods all affect how a sign performs over time.
Rather than asking only:
“What is the cheapest shop sign?”
a much more useful question is:
“What is the best shop signage I can achieve within my budget?”
That allows us to consider where spending additional money genuinely improves the finished result, and where it doesn't.
Can I Keep My Existing Fascia and Just Change the Graphics?
Often, yes.
A complete replacement is not always necessary.
If an existing fascia, tray or support structure remains in good condition, it may be possible to retain it and replace or update the graphics, lettering or panels.
You may also be able to improve an existing shopfront by adding window graphics, changing the lettering, introducing illumination or adding a projecting sign.
A proper survey allows us to establish what can safely be retained and where your budget will make the biggest visual difference.
What Should Be Included in a Shop-Sign Quotation?
This is important because two quotations may not actually be quoting for the same thing.
Depending on the project, a professional signage quotation may need to take account of design, surveys, materials, manufacturing, fixings, access equipment, installation and electrical requirements.
Before choosing purely on price, make sure you understand what is included and what isn't.
Our guide to choosing a sign company gives you some useful questions to ask before appointing a supplier.
Can I Spread the Cost of New Signage?
For qualifying projects, The Sussex Sign Company offers interest-free payment options to help businesses spread the cost of their signage investment.
This can be particularly useful when a complete shopfront or rebrand coincides with other business expenditure.
You can read more about the available options in our guide to sign finance and spreading the cost of business signage.
How Do I Get an Accurate Price for My Shop Signage?
You do not need to know exactly what type of sign you require before contacting us.
A good starting point is to send us a photograph of your shopfront together with your logo or branding and tell us what you are hoping to achieve.
Approximate dimensions are useful if you have them, but don't worry if you don't.
It also helps to tell us your approximate budget. That does not mean we're simply going to spend all of it. It allows us to recommend realistic options and show you where your money will make the greatest difference.
You don't need to understand aluminium composite, sign trays, acrylic thicknesses, LED systems or vinyl specifications.
That's our job.
